Leading a collaborative effort with three UN agencies to develop the United Nations Partner Portal, streamlining business processes and enhancing collaboration with Civil Society Organizations.
I had the honor of working on the United Nations Partner Portal (UNPP), a pioneering web application that simplifies inter-agency collaboration for UN agencies by providing a unified platform for managing and engaging with partner organizations. As part of the Tivix team, we focused on delivering a seamless user experience, consistent design language, and robust technical implementation to cater to the complex needs of the United Nations.
The United Nations Partner Portal (UNPP) emerged as an inter-agency initiative led by three prominent UN agencies - UNICEF, WFP, and UNHCR. With the UN's complex organizational structure and distributed operations, the collaboration with partner organizations faced bottlenecks, manual data entry, and inefficient workflows.
Tivix stepped up to address these challenges, leading the development process for two portals within the UNPP. As part of our responsibilities, we handled UX/UI design, backend and frontend development, production, and ongoing support. Strong communication skills and a deep understanding of UN agencies' work were pivotal to execute this ambitious project successfully.
Our design philosophy aligned with the UNICEF ecosystem's consistency, emphasizing clean layouts and leveraging Google's Material Design approach. This enabled us to provide a user-friendly experience with intuitive elements such as Tooltips, Cards, and Tabs, ensuring a consistent and familiar UX.
Over a span of 2.5 years, our dedicated team of 3-6 members worked full-time on the project, collaborating with UN employees based in New York and Geneva. We adopted a hybrid agile approach, combining a waterfall methodology during the requirements phase with agile sprints for the main development phase. Regular showcases of deliverables and continuous feedback loops ensured progress and alignment with UN's requirements.
The result of our efforts was the creation of two portals within UNPP:
Upon completion, the project was transitioned to the United Nations International Computing Centre (UNICC) for further maintenance and global roll-out across different UN agencies.
Throughout this groundbreaking initiative, I played a pivotal role as part of the Tivix team in leading the development and delivery of the United Nations Partner Portal. My responsibilities encompassed the entire spectrum of product management, from envisioning the seamless user experience to overseeing the technical implementation.
I collaborated closely with stakeholders from three UN agencies (UNICEF, WFP, UNHCR), comprehending their unique needs and translating them into actionable requirements. This involved gathering high-level requirements and translating them into detailed technical specifications.
As part of the design team, I ensured consistency with the UNICEF ecosystem by adopting Google's Material Design approach. This included crafting clean layouts, using familiar design elements such as Tooltips, Cards, and Tabs to enhance user intuitiveness.
Furthermore, I played an instrumental role in orchestrating the platform's development using Polymer as a frontend framework, creating common user interface elements that fostered a seamless user journey.
Managing a dedicated team of 3-6 members, I maintained strong communication channels to synchronize efforts with UN employees based in New York and Geneva. Embracing a hybrid agile approach, we showcased regular deliverables every 2 weeks, incorporating feedback for the next phase.
As the project evolved, I took pride in witnessing the successful completion of two portals - UNPP for Agencies and UNPP for Partners. These platforms now serve as a unified source of truth, empowering agencies to request Expressions of Interest from Civil Society Organizations while facilitating partner organizations' access to critical documents and reports.
The fulfillment of our commitment culminated in the project's seamless transition to the United Nations International Computing Centre (UNICC), signaling the start of a new chapter in enhancing inter-agency collaboration and digital transformation across various UN agencies worldwide.
